and that is the top commander in afghanistan, general john allen. turns out the pentagon is now investigating him as well for sending inappropriate e-mails to jill kelly. now, if you remember from yesterday, kelly is the same woman who sparked this whole investigation because petraeus' mistress paula broadwell was sending her e-mails. allen is saying he did nothing wrong and is maintaining his current position within the military. now, many are wondering why the fbi would get involved if this is nothing more than an affair. but we're now hearing fears of potential security leaks. in a speech at the university of denver broadwell suggested the libya attack was targeting a secret prison at the benghazi consulate. federal agents have been searching broadwell's home. late last night and into early this morning. not only did she have thousands of e-mails between her and petraeus detailing the affair. she also had classified material on her computer. as of yet the fbi doesn't believe that came from petraeus but it is illegal. more bill

and that's got to be balanced. it has to include revenues and squeezing the pentagon a bit and obviously, maybing some entitlement reforms. if the leap adership an preside can negotiate that, that's great, but the worst option would be if they failed to negotiate and i'm a real skeptic, then the worst thing we could do is change the date from january 1 to say august or september. that would send a terrible signal to the markets. congress once again dodging its responsibilities and our responsibilities to come up with something that's durable and sustainable. if january 1 comes then, it's not so much a cliff as it is a slope. we would be under enormous pressure to come up with that balanced deal, so my view is much better for us to get a good, durable deal that is achieved before and after january 1. >> so, congressman, you know, i never want to hear the term fiscal which i have again. i mean, the election sent a mandate. we want something done. >> you're right about that and if the leadership and the president are able to negotiate and we get it done, that would be the best thing. but yo

-tightening mode, it's important to keep in mind it's not just the pentagon that has not done things very cost effectively. i'm a big fan of the recent health care reform, but it was, you know, one of its strong points was not cost containment. and in addition, the cost containment measures that were there were not viewed as credible. and so that was a political decision, and partly it was a function of how it was done. and, you know, again i'm being cynical. i say the republicans, it's not so much that -- you know, republicans are not a monolith although they're closer than democrats, but some republicans genuinely don't want to increase taxes on the middle class and don't want a double dip recession. but the way that the party, the revealed preferences of the party in recent years has been they're much more concerned about the wealthy, you know, tan they are about these things -- than they are about these things. the democrats, so we are told now, i mean, it's a bargaining position. you know, the president has gone all out saying one thing they really want out of this is tax increases, you k
